Hoax

A new specie of weird insect has been discovered recently!

Hoax Project november 2011 to december 2011 at the NAD Centre;Team Work with Gabriel Gagné

The oniscidea episma

The main goal of that project was to create an hoax, combining 3D Animation and Real Footage.

Our idea was to push the realism of the scene, using advanced tracking, and interpreting the video has amateur footage.

The basic concept was to create an insect with a banal look, but with the particularity of changing colour whenever in contact with a stimulus. In this scene, the girl blows on the bug witch seems to react instantly ; we could assume some type of defence system.

We first published the video on Youtube to see what reaction it would generate ; and if unfortunately the colour changing trick didn't convince people, no one seemed to have noticed the fact that the insect isn't in fact, real at all.

So maybe our video didn't cause any commotion, but on the other side, the illusion fundamentally worked.

Design, Modelling and Textures

We separated the tasks.

My team-mate, Gabriel Gagné animated, did the camera tracking, and the final cut.

I was busy with the modelling of the creature and its design, witch was somewhere in between the woodlouse and the silverfish.

On the modelling side, I tried my best to give it a realistic look with 3D sculpting software, enhancing the textures and relief.

I first thought we would make the bug a bit bigger in the scene so I gave might have over-detailed it. But here is nonetheless how it went.

Environmental study and shooting

We orchestrated a shooting in a banal environment, again for this short film.

We first filmed, and then took referential pictures to be able to calibrate the ratios and colours for the output.
